لقب الكاتب الكبير خيري شلبي بأديب الفقراء والمهمشين، وأديب الشعب الذي أحب الناس حبا شديداً.. وعبر عنهم بصدق ونعومة فائقة، عمل أستاذا زائرا بمعهد الفنون المسرحية لتدريس تاريخ المسرح المصري المعاصر، وترجمت معظم رواياته للعديد من اللغات منها “الروسية والصينية والإنجليزية والفرنسية والأوردية والعبرية والإيطالية” وخصوصا رواياته: الأوباش، الوتد، فرعان من الصبار، بطن البقرة، وكالة عطية، صالح هيصة..
قدمت عنه عدة رسائل للماجستير والدكتوراه في جامعات القاهرة وطنطا والرياض وأكسفورد وإحدى الجامعات الألمانية.
وهو ينتمى الى جيل الستينيات، هو من مواليد ٣١ يناير قرية شباس عمير بمركز قلين بمحافظة كفر الشيخ في ١٩٣٨، ورحل عن عالمنا في ٩ سبتمبر ٢٠١١..
قدم عبر ما يقرب من النصف قرن المزيد من الأعمال الرائعة والنفائس، فكانت رحلته الأدبية الغنية مزيدا من العطاء، ظل يعطي حتى اللحظات الأخيرة من عمره، استطاع أن يرسم بالكلمة وكأنه ممسك بريشة بارعة تنقل أدق التفاصيل التشريحية والنفسية وتغوص بها فى أعماق الشخصيات الشهيرة من خلال بورتريهاته التي نالت الشهرة والإعجاب، كتب العديد من الروايات والمجموعات القصصية والمقالات وكان أول من أسس سلسلة مكتبة الدراسات الشعبية التي قدم من خلالها الكثير من الأعمال الأدبية والنقدية منذ عام ١٩٩٥ وحتى عام ۲۰۱۱ ، كتب خيرى شلبى ما يقرب من ٧٥ كتابا تضم روايات وقصصا قصيرة ومسرحيات ودراسات فى الأدب الشعبي وادب الرحلات منها السنيورة، الأوباش، الشطار الوتد العراوى، فرعان من الصبار، موال البيات والنوم، ثلاثية الأمالى “أولنا ولد – وثانينا الكومى – وثالثنا الورق” بغلة العرش، لحس العتب، وكالة عطية سارق الفرح بطن البقرة صهاريج اللؤلؤ، وآخر رواياته “اسطاسية” التي تناول من خلالها قضية الفتنة الطائفية والفساد، كان شلبى رئيسا للجنة القصة بالمجلس الأعلى للثقافة ورئيسا لتحرير سلسلة ( مكتبة الدراسات الشعبية بالهيئة العامة لقصور الثقافة فى مصر. نال العديد من الجوائز منها جائزة الدولة التشجيعية في الآداب عام ۱۹۸۰ ، ووسام العلوم والفنون من الطبقة الأولى عام ۱۹۸۱ . وجائزة الدولة التقديرية في الآداب عام ٢٠٠٥.
ومن أقواله : «حياتنا كلّها فنادق رخيصة وحقائب سفر وغرف مبقعة الفرش بعرق الآخرين وبقاياهم» .. «و طالما أن جميع القائمين على الشغل في بلادنا يمدون الأيدي حتى وإن لم يخرجوها من جيوبهم فإن ما تسمونه القانون والضمير والعدل مجرد كلام في كلام يا بوي» ..
ومن أعماله : كتاب “أعيان مصر، صحبة العشاق، فرسان الضحك، وله كتب نقدية ودراسات أدبية، ومن كتبه في هذا الصدد: “غذاء الملكة” ، “لطائف اللطائف” “أبو حيان التوحيدي”

قدمت أعماله للسينما في: فيلم الشطار مع المخرج نادر جلال عن رواية بنفس العنوان، وفيلم سارق الفرح مع المخرج داود عبد السيد عن قصة قصيرة.
ومن أعماله في التليفزيون: مسلسل (الوتد) من إخراج أحمد النحاس.مسلسل (الكومي) عن ثلاثية الأمالي ومن إخراج محمد راضي.وقد كتب المؤلف السيناريو والحوار لكل من المسلسلين.
