ولد الشيخ إمام في أسرة ريفية بسيطة، وكان والده فلاحا فقير.. فقد بصره في طفولته نتيجة إصابته بالرمد وسوء العلاج، ثم حفظ القرآن الكريم وهو صغير، ومن هنا جاء لقب “الشيخ”.. تعلم الموسيقى وعزف العود، وتأثر بالمقامات العربية وبعدد من كبار الموسيقيين، حتى أصبح ملحنًا ومغنيًا ذا أسلوب مميز، عاش معظم حياته في ظروف مادية متواضعة، واشتهر بأن منزله كان مفتوحا للمثقفين والفنانين والطلاب..
ولد الشيخ إمام بقرية أبو النمرس بمحافظة الجيزة، في ٢ يوليو ١٩١٨ ورحل عن عالمنا في ٧ يونيو ١٩٩٥ .. ارتبط اسم الشيخ إمام بأغانيه السياسية مع الشاعر أحمد فؤاد نجم في أوائل الستينيات، وكانوا من أشهر الثنائيات في تاريخ الأغنية السياسية العربية ، ومنذ ذلك الوقت قدّم ألحانًا لقصائده التي تناولت القضايا السياسية والاجتماعية، وأصبحت أغانيهما معبرة عن فئات واسعة من الناس.
سجن الشيخ امام هو والشاعر أحمد فؤاد نجم عدة مرات في ستينيات وسبعينيات القرن الماضي، وكانت الأسباب الرئيسية هي غناء قصائد تنتقد الأوضاع السياسية والاجتماعية.. وصنفت بعض أغانيهما بأنها معارضة للسلطة في ذلك الوقت، كانوا يقدمون تلك الأغاني في الحفلات والتجمعات كثنائي رغم المنع والتحذير والاعتقال..
تفاوتت مدد اعتقال الشيخ إمام من مرة لأخرى، لكنها بلغت في مجموعها عدة سنوات خلال فترات مختلفة، تعرضا للاعتقال في أواخر عهد الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر. وفي عهد الرئيس أنور السادات،
لم يتوقف الشيخ امام عن الغناء أو التلحين بسبب الاعتقال والسجن بل أن بعض أشهر أعماله خرجت من تجربة السجن حيث تناول فيها قضايا الحرية والعدالة الاجتماعية، لم يقتصر فنه على الأغاني السياسية، بل قدّم أيضًا أعمالًا عاطفية وصوفية وشعبية، إلا أن شهرته السياسية طغت على بقية إنتاجه، مما جعله رمزًا للأغنية السياسية، وأصبح رمزًا للأغنية الاحتجاجية في مصر والعالم العربي لدى كثير من محبيه، بينما رأى آخرون أن بعض أعماله كانت حادة في نقدها السياسي، لذا يبقى تقييم تجربته الفنية والسياسية محل اختلاف بين الناس.
